iMovie for iPhone Tips: Showing “Title” display for a short part of a clip

I have noticed several comments or authors of other videos mention they wish they could have the “title” show up for just a portion of a clip. Well, you can.

Basically, to make sure everyone is on the same page, here’s some background.

You can select a Theme from a somewhat limited choice of styles provided by iMovie.

When you add a video clip to your time line, you can double-click on the clip in order to do various things, such as turn off the audio from that clip. The top choice is for a “Title Style”. If you select a title style, you should see a text box show up on the clip in the clip window. Clicking in that box allows you to add or edit text in that box.

Some people have complained that if you use this feature, the title stays on the screen for the entire display ‘time’ of the clip. Several of those people have wished they could control when or how long that title is displayed.

Similar to my previous tip about how to slice up a clip and use it in multiple areas, out of order, you can achieve the desired effect of “Title Time Control”, using that same method.

Let’s pretend I want a title to say “Watch Out!” for 30 seconds at about the 1 minute mark of the video:

  1. Drop the clip onto the time line.
  2. Shorten that clip to end just at 1 minute
  3. Drop the same clip onto the time line at the end of the clip in step 1.
  4. Shorten that clip so that it starts just at the 1 minute mark (you see where this is going, don’t you?)  🙂
  5. Double click the new clip, from step 3, and add the title style. Click on the text box and add “Watch Out”.
  6. Shorten that same clip so that it runs for only 30 seconds.
  7. Now, drop that ANOTHER copy of that same clip onto the time line, at the end of the clip with the title  in step 3.
  8. Shorten that clip so that it starts running at 1:30.
  9. Play

What you’ll see is:

First minute of clip without a title

Next 30 seconds of clip with a title

Rest of clip without a title

I hope this helps all you budding video editors! Good Luck!

  1. Actually, there is a much easier way. Move the clip to the one minute mark, tap the clip to select it, and swipe your hand down the red line. That will split the clip. This way you don’t have to deal with lining up the clips perfectly, and if you choose “no transition,” the clip is still seamless. That way you can add a title/caption to either part of the clip.

[Thanks, Nick! Excellent comment about the new feature in this upgrade. I’m glad to see Apple continuing to enhance iMovie. Thanks for commenting. –Chandler ]
